Armed suspects rob Gateway store

The armed suspects are still at large.

DURBAN North SAPS are looking for two men involved in the robbery of a well-known clothing store at Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Tuesday morning at about 11am. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North station, a case of a armed robbery had been opened by the station.

It’s alleged the two suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun, stormed the store shortly after it opened. The men made off with money from the float as well as a number of cell phones.

“The suspects entered the store pushing a trolley pretending to be customers. One of the men produced a firearm and demanding cash from the till. They made of with R7 000 in cash and a number of cell phones. The men also robbed staff of their belongings in the incident,” he said.

According to Deokaran, no one was injured in the incident and the suspects are still on the loose.

Gateway theatre of Shopping confirmed the robbery had taken place. In a statement issues yesterday, the mall thanked role players for their quick response and support

“The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash and merchandise before fleeing the mall. No injures were sustained. Gateway would like to thank all role players for their quick response and support. The incident is currently under investigation by the SAPS,” the statement said.

The incident comes a week after NWJ Jewellers was robbed at Cornubia Mall. It is alleged three armed suspects stormed the store and held the staff up at gunpoint. An undisclosed amount of jewellery was taken in the robbery and the suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a white VW Polo.
