Armed suspects rob jewellery store at Cornubia Mall

In a statement released on their Facebook page, the mall said no one was harmed in the incident.

A JEWELLERY shop was robbed on Friday at the newly opened Cornubia Mall. The robbery comes less than a month after the opening of the R1.6-billion development which is part of KwaZulu-Natal’s largest mixed-use, mixed-income, fully-integrated human settlement.

While the mall confirmed the robbery had taken place, they could not say how much was stolen in the robbery which occurred on Friday morning.

It is alleged three armed suspects stormed the store and held the staff up at gunpoint. An disclosed amount of jewellery was taken in the robbery and the suspects were seen fleeing in a white VW Polo.

In a statement released on their Facebook page, the mall said no one was harmed in the incident.

“We would like to assure you that no one was harmed, and our security team remains on high alert for your safety. We at Cornubia Mall take the safety of our shoppers and retailers very seriously. We are working closely with local law enforcement to assist in their investigation of this case. We will also be launching our own investigation internally, in order to further improve our security and safety standards for you,” they said.

The robbery is the first since July where a spate of mall robberies took place within the greater Durban area in recent months. A day after police arrested the ‘Kingpin’ behind some of the mall robberies, the MTN store at La Lucia Mall was also robbed.
