Police officer killed after shipping container falls on car

To access the victims, the container first had to be removed from the vehicle and then fire fighters and rescue personnel used the Jaws of Life to free them from the wreck.

A POLICE officer has been killed in a horrific accident in Rotterdam Road in Bayhead after a shipping container fell on the vehicle he was seated in.  Paramedics from Netcare 911, Rescue Care and various other services attended the scene.

According to Nick Dollman, Netcare 911 spokesman, reports from the scene allege that during the storm a 40 foot container which was stacked on top of other containers was blown over and landed on the car. The incident and preceding events will form part of a police investigation.

“Paramedics attended to the two occupants of the car. The first man, who was approximately 30 years old, sustained relatively minor injuries but was trapped inside the car when the roof collapsed under the weight of the container. He was in a stable condition and was transported by ambulance to hospital for further assessment and care. Tragically the second occupant, believed to be in his 40s, sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.

To access the victims, the container first had to be removed from the vehicle and then fire fighters and rescue personnel used the Jaws of Life to free them from the wreck.

Several areas of Durban have been adversely affected by the heavy storm which has swept across the coast. It first broke this morning on Durban’s south coast, bringing traffic to a standstill. The old Durban ariport has been flooded and several cars have been abandoned due to the high waters.

In other storm related news, SANRAL have confirmed rumours surrounding the collapse of the M41 bridge is false.

“The Mt Edgecombe Interchange (where the N2 and M41 intersect) has been inspected by site engineers and no structures have been found to have collapsed. A cut face on the M41 between the Mt Edgecombe Interchange and the new Flanders Drive Interchange (where the new Flanders Drive on-ramp goes onto the M41), did collapse onto the M41, closing part of the M41 east bound.

“The actual road is, however, intact and will be reopened once debris has been cleared. Motorists are urged to proceed with caution and adhere to speed limits. The patience and co-operation of motorists will be appreciated,” the agency said in a statement.
