Armed gang open fire on La Lucia homeowner

One of the shots fired struck the homeowner's car door.

A LA Lucia woman was lucky to escape serious injury after an armed gang opened fire on her vehicle on Friday night on Braemar Avenue. The men were leaving the property when they were surprised by the homeowner who had just returned home. According to Kyle van Reenen of Marshall Security, one of the shots fired struck her passenger door.

“The resident tried to block her driveway to stop the gang from fleeing, however, they fired a few shots in her direction, one of which struck her door. The gang then sped off in an unknown direction and made off with TV’s and a few other electronic items,” he said.

The incident followed an armed robbery half an hour earlier on Sunny Circle in Sunningdale, where a homeowner was assaulted by an armed gang.

“The four suspects derailed the gate before breaking the front door of the home. One of the men was armed with a handgun and they were all wearing balaclavas. The homeowner was assaulted by the suspects who then confined him to a bathroom. We believe his children were asleep in another room. The gang ransacked the house before fleeing the scene. The homeowner was able to remove the bars from the window in his bathroom before calling for help,” he said.

The incidents comes on the back of a crime spike in the area.

In the past 15 days, there has been six armed home invasions and six break-ins across the North Durban area.
