WATCH: Local resident saves bird with hook stuck in mouth

Amazing scenes as a tern is given something to smile about when a sharp-thinking wildlife hero saves its life.

A LOCAL resident is being hailed as a hero after catching a bird with his bare hands before saving it. Andy Kerr spotted the distressed Tern on the Mdloti River – a fishing hook had pierced the bird’s tongue.

“It was incredibly distressing seeing this little creature so helpless and suffering in such agony. I managed to catch it and safely remove the hook with the help of a few local residents. Fortunately it wasn’t terribly badly injured and managed to fly away on it’s own,” he explained.

Kerr managed to capture the rescue on his phone:

“Local fishermen in the area really need to take more responsibility when disposing of their rubbish, like hooks and line. This kind of thing is so unnecessary and easily preventable by just being a decent human and cleaning up your mess. Thankfully it will live on another day to catch plenty more fish at the river,” the Durban Youth Radio DJ explained on a Facebook post.
