WATCH: Hammer gang robs Virginia liquor store

The gang were armed with handguns and sledgehammers.

A GANG of men robbed the Checkers LiquorShop Virginia Circle on Thursday morning. The gang, carrying sledgehammers and firearms smashed through the glass window of the shop before making off with several bottles of alcohol. According to police sources, the gang of seven were in and out of the store within two minutes.

A video of the break-in emerged on social media showing the robbers in action. The gang are seen wearing balaclavas and frantically passing boxes of alcohol to each other in the video. The men then load the stolen items into their getaway car before speeding off. One of the sledgehammers used in the robbery was left behind at the scene of the crime.

According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Durban North SAPS are investigating a case of robbery and no arrests have yet been made.

The robbery comes two weeks after a gang of three men, armed with a bush knife and a hand gun, robbed a bottle store on Romsey Grove.

The men tied the staffs’ hands behind their backs before stealing ‘high-end’ liquor, cigarettes and the cash from the store. The suspects also removed the CCTV recording system, before making off in a getaway vehicle.

It is unclear if the incidents are related.

Since the beginning of this year there has been a spate of mall robberies within the greater Durban area in recent months.

Checkers confirmed the robbery adding that there were no reported injuries. Their media team said the store will open for trade ‘as soon as possible’.

“Checkers is working with the SAPS to investigate the matter and further queries may be directed to the Durban North SAPS detective branch on 031 560 8000,” they said in a statement.
