Anti-nuclear activists converge in Durban

Hear from anti-nuclear activists on why people are resisting nuclear power around the world.

THE resistance to nuclear energy will be the topic of discussion this weekend when South African, Russian and American anti-nuclear activists come together to address the issue.

Makoma Lekalakala (South Africa), Vladimir Slivyak (Russia) and Chris Williams from the US are being hosted by Earthlife Africa and the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA).

Recently Earthlife Africa Johannesburg  and SAFCEI challenged the government’s nuclear deals with Russia, the US and South Korea.  In April, the deals were declared unlawful and unconstitutional.  “This was a major victory for the anti-nuclear campaign in South Africa,” Earthlife Africa said in a statement.

The trio will share their experience fighting nuclear power and talk about the situation in their countries and across the world. Various countries have been phasing out nuclear energy and they will share why people are resisting nuclear power and how they manage to successfully stop the construction of nuclear reactors.

Slivyak is with the Russian environmental organisation Ecodefense. He was the principal organiser for various campaigns in Russia and abroad which succeeded in halting construction of nuclear reactors and international transportation of nuclear waste. He has been involved in the campaign against new nuclear reactors in South Africa since 2015.

Williams is a long time sustainable energy policy activist. He currently serves as board chair of the Nuclear Information and Research Service.

The event will take place at St Paul’s Church, 161 Monty Naicker Road, Durban Central, (opposite the Workshop) on Saturday, 16 September from 4pm to 6.30pm.
