11 cash-in-transit suspects killed during August

R96 million has been taken in cash-in-transit robberies so far this year.

A TOTAL of 11 alleged cash-in-transit (CIT) suspects were killed during the month of August in KZN. Police have also arrested 11 suspects, two of whom were critically injured during the shootouts. The latest shootout occurred on the N2 at Staffords Post near Harding.

It is alleged the suspects opened fire on police officers who immediately retaliated to defend themselves. A total of four AK 47 rifles, a 9mm pistol and additional rifle was seized by police. According to police, information indicated that the suspects were going to rob the armoured vehicle which was transporting money along that route.

According to The Citizen, R96 million has been taken in cash-in-transit robberies so far this year. The report states that the robberies are broken into two parts, CIT robberies and Cross Pavement Carrier (CPC) robberies. CIT robberies for 2017 between January and August have already hit 47, compared with 31 over the same period last year.

Last week, five men involved in an attempted cash-in-transit robbery on Umgeni Road were killed in a high speed chase and shootout which ended in Parlock. Three suspects were arrested in the incident.

Hillcrest: Three suspects killed, one arrested

Two weeks before that, three suspects were killed after a high speed chase which ended in a crash on the M13. One of the suspects was arrested. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the four armed men robbed the security guards of an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene in a blue VW Golf.
