N2 shootout suspects had police radio

THE suspects involved in a high speed chase and shootout on the N2 near Queen Nandi Drive were found in possession of a police radio as well as housebreaking implements. This was confirmed by KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, who earlier this week, commended police officers for their extreme bravery while under fire.

Three suspects were fatally wounded in the shootout with police while two were arrested with the help of a police chopper. Both arrested suspects were taken to hospital for treatment and later one of them died.

“Once the surviving thug is discharged from hospital, he will face a number of charges including attempted murder, possession of property suspected to be stolen as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.This incident once again serves as a warning to criminals that our police officers will defend themselves when they come under fire while executing their duties. Our police officers were extremely professional and the response witnessed is in line with the back to basics approach adopted by police,” said Langa.

The police officers spotted a white Mercedes Benz, with five occupants along the N2 north bound freeway near Queen Nandi Drive. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, after receiving a tip-off of a planned robbery, the suspects opened fire on the policemen whilst fleeing.

The vehicle used by the suspects was taken during a robbery in Sydenham last month.

“Police seized four unlicensed firearms with ammunition, a police radio and housebreaking implements.Three police officers were injured as a result of collision and were also taken to hospital for treatment,” added Langa.
