22 drunk drivers arrested on M4
Several motorists arrested on the night told police to go after 'real criminals'.
IN the last five days, a total of 37 drunken drivers have been arrested on north Durban roads. On Tuesday night, Durban North SAPS along with Metro Police set up a roadblock on the M4 near the Virginia off-ramp. A total of 22 drivers were arrested for drunken driving including one who accused police officers of celebrating the ANC’s victory over the motion of ‘no confidence’ vote in President Jacob Zuma.
According to station spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, other drivers nabbed on the night suggested police go after ‘real criminals’.
“Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanor, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice. We have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ is ridiculous. This was the second roadblock in five days. On Friday last week, 15 drivers were arrested for drunk driving on the M41 going towards Gateway. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said
According to South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) more than 60 per cent of the 18 000 deaths a year on the roads in the country are associated with drunk drivers and/or pedestrians.
