Collapsing walls at cemetery a security concern
The City are yet to take action to fix the damaged sections of wall.
SECURITY concerns over several gaps, and in some cases, a total collapse of a section of wall, along a boundary wall of the Redhill Cemetery have been raised once again. The damaged sections along Girvan Avenue are reportedly being used by criminals as an escape route.
According to Ward 110 councillor, Pete Graham, the matter had been reported to the City’s Parks department almost two months ago. However, no action had been taken to bolster or fix the damaged sections of wall.
“I’m concerned more sections along Girvan Avenue will collapse. It is frightfully easy to move some of the wall at the moment due to the compromised sections. I’ve also noticed that several tree roots are forcing the fence to lean outward which could also be detrimental to the structural integrity of the wall. The cemetery is run by the Parks Department and they have a responsibility to manage their own property effectively. I understand there are issues with supply management but this is ridiculous, we haven’t had a single reply over the matter for more than two months,” he said.

Chairman of the Mvoti Neighbourhood Watch, Grant Cockburn added his voice to the concerns saying criminals are using the hole as an access point to the cemetery after committing crimes in the area.
“We see a lot of vandalism, cable theft and damage to tombstones within the cemetery. These sections are a concern especially as it was reported two months ago. If the City could just trim the trees back in some sections it would help prevent other sections from collapsing. There are also sections along Ryde Place where there are large gaps in the fence,” he said.
