uMhlanga Ridge Emirates airline targeted by robbers

The suspects crashed into a traffic circle on Umhlanga Rocks Drive and later abandoned their vehicle.

CHAOS erupted in uMhlanga Ridge on Tuesday morning as three suspects robbed the Emirates travel agency on Palm Boulevard.

At around 6am an Enforce’s CCTV controller spotted a black Mercedes-Benz stop outside the shop, said Brad Ross, the Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre control room manager.

Two suspects, wearing caps exited the vehicle and walked towards the shop.

Ross said the controller then turned the camera and saw the suspect’s carrying items from the shop to the Mercedes- Benz and immediately called for patrollers to respond.

“One patroller responded and stopped in front of the vehicle blocking its path, the suspects then attempted to flee by reversing up Palm Boulevard. A second patroller then came up behind the vehicle boxing them in. The suspects then rammed into the first response car and managed to flee up Medigate Road,” he said.

In a desperate attempt to escape the suspect then turned into oncoming traffic on Umhlanga Rocks Drive. The driver then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the traffic circle opposite McDonalds.

They drove the damaged vehicle to Nokwe Avenue where it was abandoned with the stolen goods.

Ross said none of the patrollers were injured and commended the team’s efforts to try and arrest the suspects.

Captain Raymond Deokaran, of the Durban North SAPS, confirmed the incident and said that the vehicle and stolen goods had been recovered. Five computer screens had been stolen from the shop.

“We are investigating the incident. The number plates on the vehicle are false, so we are trying to track down the owner of the vehicle to determine if it was stolen, and if it was used in any other criminal cases,” he said.
