Still no closure for Scriven family after court decision
The Sunningdale resident was swept away in flash floods in July last year.
ALMOST a year after being swept away by flood waters, Brenda Scriven has officially been declared dead. The Durban High Court made the decision on Wednesday after an application was made by the Scriven family last month. The local resident and mother of three was washed away in flood waters in July last year.
Several search and rescue operations were conducted with the Durban SAPS K9 unit heading up a number of sweeps for a month. Hundreds of local residents also assisted the family in the search but sadly to no avail.
An emotional Lindy-Leigh Swales, who spoke to the Northglen News this week, said despite the news, there was still no closure for the family.

“I think it finally hit home when the judgement was handed down, it made it more real. Both my sisters and I thought this would make it easier but it really hasn’t. There’s still no closure for us and it has been an incredibly difficult these past few weeks. My mom was so involved in all of our lives and it’s a heartbreaking decision to have taken. We will be holding a family gathering in the coming weeks to commemorate my mom’s disappearance,” she said.
Swales thanked all those who helped look for her mother saying she drew strength from the hundreds of messages on Facebook and other social media platforms.
“The support and love from the community has been unbelievable. We still get messages daily from people sharing inspirational quotes or sending a personal message and we draw such strength from that,” she said.

Swales added now that the court application had been finalised, the family would be focusing on fundraising for the K-9s for Brenda, an NPO set up for search and rescue organisations to honour her mom’s memory.
