Chief to bare his sole for the SPCA

The SPCA has set up a GivenGain page for him under the hashtag #RacingForRescues.

AN animal lover and an avid runner is taking on this year’s Totalsports Women’s 10 kilometre race in Durban to raise funds for the Durban & Coast SPCA. Chief Mthembu is easily recognisable on any marathon course as there is a distinct feature which sets him apart, he runs barefoot.

He has run more than a 100 events barefoot and recently completed his first Comrades Marathon barefoot.

The SPCA has set up a GivenGain page for him under the hashtag #RacingForRescues. Mthembu will be wearing the colours of the SPCA in the race and said this will not be a once off event.

“I’ve been supporting the SPCA for the last four years and doing this for the organisation is not about me. It is about raising as much awareness for the cause as possible. I also want to motivate other people out there to do something like this for a charitable cause.

“I’ve often had an idea while running of dedicating my event for a cause and when I proposed the idea, the SPCA really got behind me. Besides the Totalsports event which is on 16 July I also intend to run the Nelson Mandela Marathon, Soweto Marathon and a couple more after that for the SPCA,” he said.

To help the cause visit the GivenGain page

Lindsey Concer, spokesperson for the SPCA said they’d set a target of R20 000.

“We are really hoping the community get behind Chief as this is such a brilliant idea. We are just blown away by his gesture and we have set up a GivenGain page for residents to support the cause,” she said.
