High speed chase leads to shootout

The suspects were using a black Mercedes linked to a number of crimes in the Durban area.

A HIGH speed chase through the streets of Durban led to a shootout between suspects and Marshall Security members on Sunday evening. The incident occurred just after 5pm. According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, one of the company’s patrol vehicles spotted a suspicious black Mercedes on Soofie Saheb Drive.

“After contacting the control room, the vehicle fitted the registration and description of a vehicle wanted for several crimes in the greater Durban and surrounding areas of late. The driver of the suspect’s vehicle noticed the reaction officer was following the vehicle and increased speed in a reckless attempt to evade arrest.

“Traveling at high speed the vehicle fled in a southerly direction on Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue, with the Marshall Security armed reaction officer in pursuit, the vehicle turned up Simso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road before taking a turn onto Percy Osborne Road where the vehicle came to a stop. Two occupants of the Mercedes-Benz alighted from the vehicle brandishing AK47 rifles, firing several shots at the armed reaction officer who took cover returning fire, with several high calibre rounds striking the officers vehicle,” he said.

The suspects fled in the vehicle towards Umgeni Road.

“An extensive search of the area was conducted however the suspects managed to evade arrest. The Marshall Security armed reaction officer was unharmed in the ordeal,” he said.
