Traffic lights set for Marion, Newport Avenue intersection

Three intersections are earmarked for the installation of traffic lights.

THREE intersections in uMhlanga, Somerset Park and Glenashley are set for major changes following a decision by eThekwini’s Traffic Authority (ETA) to install traffic lights. Newport Avenue at the intersection of Marion Avenue, Herrwood Drive at the intersection of Autumn Dive and Keynsham Drive at the intersection of Umhlanga Rocks Drive are the three sections earmarked for the installation of traffic lights. The move comes after concerns were raised over the number of accidents at the intersections from residents in the area. Ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, welcomed the news saying it was a victory for residents.

“The most pleasing of the changes for me is the Marion and Newport Avenue intersection. We’ve had several accidents in the last few years including one on Friday. We had put in repeated calls for some sort of speed calming and the City acquiesced to this because of the proximity of the intersection to the Glenashley Prep School and the number of crashes in the last three years. I urge residents to bear with the City as the installation work begins in the coming months,” he explained.

This accident occurred on Friday (26 May) at the Marion and Newport Avenue intersection.

De Boer said the new development in the uMhlanga New Town Centre and Prestondale necessitated the change for Autumn Drive.

“The decision to install traffic lights at this intersection were twofold. I’ve received a number of complaints from residents about motorists speeding down Autumn Drive. The road is also one of the linking roads to Izinga Ridge, a new development, which has resulted in an increase in traffic volumes,” he said.

City workers have already begun work at the Keynsham Umhlanga Rocks Drive intersection with the installation of the new traffic lights set for completion in the next two weeks.

“The necessity for this was also because of it’s proximity to the Gateway and Kindlewood Estate in Mount Edgecombe.”
