WATCH: Damaged train track raises red flags
The unsupported rail track is situated along the railway line near North Coast Road.
A CULVERT that collapsed near Puntan Hills along the uMngeni River last year has still not been fixed. What’s more, Glenashley resident, Bart Fokkens, captured footage of, what looks like, a train going over the damaged tracks this week prompting safety concerns. The rains that damaged parts of the eMdloti beach wall at the weekend, further weakened the culvert where train tracks run over.
Fokkens questioned why the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) and Metrorail had not done anything to fix it.
“The culvert collapsed last year and Prasa are yet to repair it. The culvert was further damaged following the heavy rains over the past weekend. The train line is hanging above a collapsed section. This is an accident waiting to happen,” he said.
However, Isabel van der Westhuizen, acting Metrorail KZN spokesperson, said there was nothing to worry about.
“The damaged section is not a passenger line. While the video shows what looks like the train going over the damaged line, it is actually travelling on a second line a few metres away. The line isn’t being used at the moment because it is not safe to use,” she said.
It is unclear when the damaged section will be repaired.
