La Lucia ‘land invasion’ leaves homeowner stranded
The homeowner has been locked out of his own home for three weeks by people claiming they own the house.
A LA Lucia resident has been locked out of his own home by men who have allegedly claimed they own it. The homeowner, Selvan Govender, whose house is situated on Braemar Avenue, said he was busy with renovations when the incident occurred.
For the past three weeks, the home worth R3-million, has been occupied by people who Govender says he does not know. Govender suspects the man living at the property, may have a fraudulent title deed.
He has now sought legal advice and has opened a case of house break-in and trespassing at the Durban North SAPS.
“This is land invasion. I bought the house in June last year and began renovating. About three weeks ago, I discovered curtains had been put in and my locks had been changed. No one was here at the time. I then employed a security guard who guarded the property at night. I was then in East London on business when the guard told me there are people on my property saying they owned the home and were threatening to arrest him.
Sean Peirce (Above) of Coast to Coast Special Investigations explains what happened at the home on Braemar Avenue. Peirce has been hired by Govender to investigate what he has termed ‘land invasion’.
“When I visited my property with the police after returning from East London, one of the men occupying my house claimed he had title deeds. He asked me if this was my property, why was I standing outside the gate? He then told me he would be in touch. I had to leave my property that night because the police could not do anything. He then tried to negotiate with me telling me he’d move by this Saturday. He even said he would hand-over my home to me once we discussed the matter. I asked what was there to discuss to which he replied that he had installed basins in the home. I said I don’t want your basins I want you out of my home,” he said.
When Northglen News met Govender on Thursday morning, the City’s electricity department was on-site cutting the electricity to the home.
“I was hoping to move in with my family by the end of year. But this has just been a frustration and a nightmare. I’ve even had to get the previous owner to come to the police station to say he sold it to me. I’ve asked the City to disconnect the electricity. There is a BMW X5 on my property and I have no idea who owns it and who it belongs to,” he said.
