DURBAN is looking to keep the Tourism Indaba firmly in the city until 2022.
The eThekwini Municipality recently announced that it would make a bid to host the event for another five years. The city is already hosting the Tourism Indaba later this year when the winner will be announced. Durban has played host to the annual event for the past 20 years.
The City said that the Indaba is of vital strategic marketing importance to Durban in positioning it as a “Big Events” city. It added that over 120 day jobs are created for 10 days.

In a statement the Municipality said, “It contributes an average of R200 million Gross Domestic Profit into eThekwini region’s economy, improves the hotel occupancy rate to 99 percent during the week of the Indaba with bed and breakfast establishments seeing an occupancy rate of over 70 percent.”
The City has budgeted R15 986 000 in the 2017/18 financial year to host the Indaba. The estimated future cost will escalate by six per cent annually to hold the national event.
