WATCH: Sunningdale resident gets ‘Zuma Must Fall’ tattoo

‘I vote ANC but Zuma Must Fall' says local resident.

AFTER being involved in the organising of the anti-Zuma marches in Durban recently, Jason Barber decided to go one step further and show how far he was willing to go to bring about change in South Africa. The Sunningdale resident recently got a ‘Zuma Must Fall’ tattoo on his arm with the overlay of the South African flag. He got the tattoo done on President Jacob Zuma’s birthday and even posted a Facebook live video of him being inked. He even prepared a special song for the president.

“Hopefully through my tattoo people will discuss why I did it, which is because Zuma has to go. If I’m willing to go through such a drastic step, I hope it will make people realise how bad things are at the moment. If nothing else I’d hope it would start a conversation about the crisis we face as country,” he said.

The tattoo was done by local artist, Byron Van Wyk.

“How it started was I put up a status on Facebook asking if any artists would be keen to tattoo ‘Zuma Must Fall’ on my body. Four artists responded and Byron was one of them. I originally wanted to do a hashtag on my arm but he had this cool idea of adding the SA flag to the piece. I left the design completely up to him,” he said.

“Some people have thought it’s really cool, while others called it crazy. For me this is not an attack on the ANC, but rather I want them to do better as a party; I vote for the ANC. I’m a masters student in immersive theater at UKZN (Howard College), all the work I’ve done is very political. If you study drama, a lot of the field is built around protest theater, post-Apartheid. I’ve definitely been shaped by that and I’ve been concientised to art as a form of protest. The body being the site of a performance,” he said.

The tattoo was done by local artist, Byron van Dyk.
