Shacks discovered on Armstrong Avenue, 5 arrested

Durban North SAPS also found two knives which one of the vagrants had in his possession.

AFTER raiding the bushes on Armstrong Avenue in December last year, police have discovered more informal dwellings. On Thursday morning, Durban North SAPS with the help of members of the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF sector 3 (eMdloti) conducted a cordon and search operation. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the shacks were bordering several residential homes in the plush suburb – five people were arrested in the joint operation.

“In one of the shacks, we discovered a father, a mother and her two-year-old baby. The mother and baby have been taken to social services. One of the vagrants arrested was found with two knives. Another vagrant was arrested for being in possession of dagga. We also conducted several other cordon and searches including the La Lucia taxi rank bushes where we found more people living in the bushes.

“The raid is part of an ongoing initiative to root out vagrants from the area. We also checked out the thickets around Beachwood but found no settlements. We have received complaints from residents in the area and though I cannot say all vagrants are criminals, we believe there is a criminal element using vagrancy in the area as a cloak,” he said.
