Rate tariff increase of over 70 per cent is a hoax, say City

Municipal tariff increases are set annually during the budget process, which is still being considered by the council.

FLYERS being distributed around Durban, saying that the rate tariff will increase by over 70 per cent this year is a hoax say the eThekwini Municipality. The City released a statement on Wednesday saying that a real estate company were distributing the flyers in post boxes.

The City did not say which company was spreading the misinformation but warned residents  not to fall for the company’s request for money.

“Residents are also informed not to contract any of these companies or organisation to act on their behalf as far as objections to their property values and high rates tariffs are concerned,” the City said.

Municipal tariff increases are set annually during the budget process, which is still being considered by the council. Peet du Plessis, Head of Revenue Management said that the company making the false claim of a 71,43 per cent increase, did so using the wrong calculations.

“The company that distributed the information to residents did not consider the variables used to calculate the rates tariffs. There are two notable variables which is the required revenue in terms of the budget that should be funded by property taxes and also the property value of all properties liable for the payment of property taxes as per legislation,” said Du Plessis.
