Chained dog suffers horrific death

The severely emaciated dog was found chained to a post.

ANIMAL rights activists have expressed their anger and horror after finding a dog that died from starvation still chained to a post in a yard in Phoenix. According to Neeri Naidoo of Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment (PACT), who responded to the heartbreaking scene, the owner’s attitude made the situation much worse.

“I am horrified. This dog was chained, it did not have adequate food, shelter or water. He slowly starved to death on a chain. He died alone and scared. You don’t have to love animals to know not to abuse them. If you don’t like them, just don’t get a pet. The owners told me they didn’t think the dog needed to go to the vet and didn’t seem phased by his condition.

“Unfortunately when we got the call to respond to this incident, it was too late. This is a criminal offence and must be reported. The dog’s body was removed by the SPCA. There was another emaciated dog on the property which we took away from the owner who didn’t seem too bothered. He is currently being fostered by a Highway resident,” she said.

According to the SPCA, chaining your dog can lead to a R60 000 fine or three years in prison.
