LISTEN: Naval base ‘freak accident’ claims 6 lives

Tragedy strikes at naval base in the Bluff as six killed in pit.

SIX people have died while 26 others have been injured following a freak accident at the Naval Base on Bayhead Road on the Bluff. While paramedics could not say what exactly caused the accident, it is believed the men were in a sewer pit when the tragedy occurred. Some have speculated that there was a gas explosion of some sort but there has been no comment from the SANDF as yet.

Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson confirmed that six people had tragically died.

It’s believed the at least three of the six people killed were members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

According to Russel Meiring of ER24, rescue teams declared the men dead on scene.

“Paramedics assessed all six men and found that they showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the men and they were declared dead on the scene. Several other patients were found on the scene with minor injuries. The patients were treated for their injuries and thereafter transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment. The details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities are on the scene for further investigations,” he said.

On Tuesday a SANDF member died after a truck transporting a tanker was involved in an accident on the Oliviershoek Pass, near Bergville.
