Cable theft suspects arrested

Police found the five men had set up a fake work site in order to steal Telkom cables.

FIVE men were arrested Wednesday after Greenwood Park SAPS received a tip off from an undercover investigator.

After receiving the information at around 1.30pm, police arrived at Northway (on Athlone bridge) to find the suspects fleeing the scene. They were all dressed in the same coloured overalls. Police and Telkom security chased down the men.

According to Greenwood Park SAPS spokeperson, W/O Leon Audh, “After apprehending the suspected cable thieves, warrant officer Sharlene Naidoo and Captain Mike Narisimulu investigated the area and found that the scene had been set up to look like an authentic work site. They also saw that the cables were severed in many places.

Our two officers then noticed a white Toyota Hilux with a fitted construction light,  parked next to the supposed Telkom site and carried out an inspection of the vehicle. Our members found out that the same car had been used in the commission of a crime in the same form of cable theft in the Newlands East area in November 2016.”

The vehicle has been impounded and the men were arrested.
