Celebrate Chinese New Year with youth band

Featuring a wide range of music genres, this concert promises to suit all music tastes.

THE KZN Youth Wind Band (KZNYWB) returns to the iZulu Theatre at Sibiya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom to celebrate the ushering in of the Chinese New Year.

Featuring a wide range of music genres, from traditional Chinese and African to film, popular and classical, this concert promises to suit all music tastes. The band will perform at 7pm on Wednesday, 15 February 2017.

Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival and is marked by the lunisolar Chinese calendar, so the date changes from year to year. Each Chinese New Year is characterised by one of 12 animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac. The official Chinese New Year was on 28 January 2017.

“Join millions of people around the world in marking the start of the Year of the Rooster with wonderful cross-cultural sounds with the KZN Youth Wind Band. There is no cost to enjoy the show,” said Belinda

Jelf, the marketing manager at Sibaya. One of South Africa’s premier youth ensembles, the KZN Youth Wind Band is made up of young musicians between the ages of 13 and 25 that are truly representative of the colourful cultural tapestry that makes up South Africa. The band has been in existence for 36 years.

The band is exceptionally proud of the fact that many members of the band come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, and have been exceptionally mentored into a bright musical future by the Durban Music School – to which the band is affiliated. Conducted by Russell Scott, the band has a varied repertoire of classic symphonic band pieces, as well as swing, pop, and film music, not to mention a fantastic real South African repertoire.

The wind band has toured many international destinations, including Mauritius, Germany, Austria, China and Great Britain. The KZNYWB is also one of six bands that have been selected to compete in the New York Symphonic Band Festival and Competition hosted at Carnegie Hall in 2017.
