Trapped North Coast Road worker finally free

Rescue workers worked frantically to rescue the man.

A MAN was rescued after rescue workers worked frantically to free him from a mound of sand. News of the man’s ordeal broke at 6.10 this evening. By 7.3opm paramedics said they were struggling to free the worker.

The incident occurred on North Coast Road just before the turnoff to Riverside Road.

The worker was laying cables when the trench collapsed. Two of three workers managed to escape. They escaped with moderate injuries.

According to Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care, the man was trapped for almost three hours.

“We had to use a specialist crane from the fire department and airbags in order to free him. The entire rescue operation lasted for two and a half hours. Fortunately the 42-year-old escaped with minor injuries after being pinned under concrete and sand. I’d like to thank all the rescue services involved in the rescue,” he said.
