Pearls Mall store targeted in theft

The three suspects are still at large following the theft on Thursday afternoon.

DURBAN North SAPS are looking for three suspects, a woman and two men, who were involved in a theft at a shop at the newly-opened Pearls Mall in uMhlanga. The thieves targeted an art store where an item valued at more than R100 000 was taken in the theft.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North station, the suspects were seen fleeing the scene of the crime in a Opel Corsa.

“We traced the registration of the vehicle’s plates and they came up as false. We believe the thieves stole a statue of some kind which was valued at more than R100 000,” Deokaran said.

In a statement from the Pearls Mall, they confirmed the theft occurred at about 5.45pm on Thursday.

“The robbery took place while the staff was preparing to close for the day. In the incident which lasted less than three minutes, the perpetrators walked into the store, which has direct street access, and one of the suspects distracted a staff member, another grabbed the goods and together they made a quick getaway with a vehicle that was waiting on the street.

“The Pearls Mall security responded immediately and police authorities were called in to report the incident and conduct further investigation. The management confirms that adequate measures are in place to provide the necessary security for the stores in the mall,” the statement said.
