April Drew overcomes rejection to shine in Ballito’s music scene

The young artist is loved for her energy on stage.

Energetic young Ballito singer April Drew is carving out a name for herself on the local music scene despite once being rejected in auditions for her school choir and a musical.

Initially focusing on soulful jazz with her saxophonist father, the 19-year-old, working under the stage name April Mae, has already hosted two sold-out shows at the Pumpkin Theatre.

For her third concert there on Saturday, she will be adding a new dimension to her repertoire with a personal spin on popular hits by well-known R&B artists under the theme of “Music of my time”.

From Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson and Beyonce, April will venture into unfamiliar territory.

“I’ve got one of those deeper voices with lots of soul suited to jazz. It just sounds so good.”

But the reason for now also venturing into the RnB genre, she said, was to cater for audiences of all ages.

“When I perform for bigger crowds, I can’t get them going with only Ray Charles and Etta James. I have to get into the pop and R&B side of things.”

Her singing journey wasn’t always smooth. After being rejected in auditions for the school choir and a musical, her confidence took a knock and she believed she was reaching too high.

“I assumed I had a terrible voice and gave up. Then, when I was about 16, I began singing again and immediately attracted compliments from people who listened. That was weird and I remember thinking that I may have a good enough voice after all,” she said.

“I think the audiences not only appreciate my voice but also my energy on stage. I sing for the crowd. It’s a successful show if, by the end of it, everyone is on their feet and dancing.”

Apart from covers, April also writes her own songs. She hasn’t published any of her work yet or put it to the test.

“I’m somewhat apprehensive. I write a lot and love it but become nervous and self-conscious when having to share it,” she said.

She hopes to front a band while she awaits her big break.
