Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates 40 years of music excellence

To facilitate access to the concerts, the orchestra management has introduced a free park and ride service with two routes.

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra has unveiled its 2023 World Symphony Series Spring Season, which also marks its 40th anniversary.

The season will run from this week (Thursday) to November 9 at the Durban Playhouse Opera Theatre, with concerts every Thursday at 7pm.

Chief Executive and Artistic Director Bongani Tembe reflected on the orchestra’s journey since its inception in 1983 and highlighted the enduring success of the World Symphony Series, which began in the 1990s.

To facilitate access to the concerts, the orchestra management has introduced a free park and ride service with two routes – one for the North Coast and another for the Upper Highway area – exclusively for this season.

The programme includes performances by German conductor Justus Franz, with the opening paying tribute to South Africa’s musical prodigy Shalati Joseph Khoza, pianist Valentina Lisitsa playing Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Dvorák’s New World’ Symphony.

Spanish conductor Irene Delgado-Jiménez debuts with Robert Schumann’s Spring Symphony, followed by violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky’s rendition of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major.

Daniel Boico returns to the podium with a line-up featuring Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, Max Bruch’s Symphony No. 3, and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto in C minor, performed by Nikita Mndoyants.

The season concludes with American maestro Robert Moody’s programme, featuring Dvorák’s Mein Heim, Sir Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony.

Tickets, priced from R50, can be booked by calling 031 369 9438 or emailing bookings@kznphil.org.za.
