Ballito surfer (12) claims South African title!

Levi never finished outside the top three in the eight events he surfed this year.

Ballito’s Levi Vosloo is a national surfing champion!

The 12-year-old shredder claimed overall victory in the boys U12 division of this year’s South African Surf Tour (SAST).

SAST age group winners were determined after nine national events, with the top six scores counting.

Levi was Mr Consistent in 2024 and never finished outside the top three in the eight events he surfed, securing one win at Durban’s Dairy Beach in July.

His overall score of 5 300 points saw him beating St Francis’ Slayde Shooter by 110 points in what was one of the closest age group divisions in the SAST.

“I felt very good about my surfing this year and I’m happy my parents were able to get me to the events. I even got to travel to some of the events without my parents,” said Levi.

In the final event of the year at Seal Point in St Francis on September 22, it was do or die for Levi who entered the competition on almost the exact same score as Shooter. The better finisher of the two would claim national glory.

It was as close between them as it had been throughout the year, as Levi surfed to second place on a combined final wave score of 9.47, just 0.30 points above Shooter in third.

“I didn’t even think about the series title. The waves were choppy at the Seal Point event and I just focused on doing my best to catch the best waves I could. My dad always tells me to trust in the ocean, and trust in myself,” he said.

Nathan Tayler was the only other iLembe Surf Rider to register a podium finish in the SAST, finishing second in the boys U16 division.

The final event on the junior surf calendar was the South African Junior Championships in Jeffrey’s Bay last weekend.

Levi claimed another medal for good measure when he finished third in the boys U12 division, followed by iLembe teammate Marcello Zedde in 4th.

iLembe had two other surfers who made their respective finals, with Lila Aszalos claiming 4th in the girls U14 and Maxine Kauffman finishing 4th in the girls U16.

It caps another strong year of surfing from iLembe’s youngsters, confirming once again that the North Coast is among the best breeding grounds for surfing talent.
