Fleet-footed Ballito soccer girls ramp it up for league victory

Winning the Greater Durban Football Association league comes only months after Ballito Royals FC was founded.

The Ballito Royals FC girls team claimed their first piece of silverware last weekend, just seven months after they were founded.

The club was formed in March this year and has mixed teams from U7-U13 and an open girls team for those aged 12-17.

It was the open girls who last weekend tasted victory, claiming the shield trophy in the Greater Durban Local Football Association (GDLFA) league. The league included eight teams from between Amanzimtoti and Ballito, after which the top four and bottom four were split into their own knockout tournaments.

Ballito Royals competed in the shield trophy, which was open to the bottom four teams. The girls played some ferocious football on their way to the final against Durban-based Legends FC.

And that momentum continued as they delivered a dominant performance on the biggest stage yet for their young team.

Elle Newton and Nikita Samuelson both scored a brace of goals and the Ballito Royals defence held firm throughout, earning the team a 4-0 win.

It was a fantastic return for the team, who will only grow in stature as the teammates have more years together to develop footballing chemistry.

Two members of the team, Madison Hope and Jamie Newall, were also selected for the GDLFA team which will compete in a national tournament in Johannesburg later this month.
