Basketball sniper shoots the lights out at African tournament

Chad Hargreaves' marksmanship from beyond the arc shines through.

Sheffield’s Chadley Hargreaves was one of South Africa’s standout performers at the recent FIBA Afrobasket U18 basketball tournament in Pretoria.

The tournament included 12 of the best U18 teams from across the continent and was played over two weeks before drawing to a close on Saturday.

It was unfortunately not one to remember for the South African team, who finished tenth overall.

The boys in green and gold lost all three group matches, before registering their only win of the tournament against Zambia in the 9th-12th classification stage.

A loss against Cote D’Ivoire in the 9th-10th playoff cemented their finishing position, a disappointing return for a home tournament.

But it was not all doom and gloom for Chadley, who showed flashes of individual brilliance in his off-the-bench role throughout.

He was particularly deadly from beyond the arc, making eight of his combined 17 three-point attempts at a very efficient clip of over 47%.

He added 17 rebounds, six assists and four steals over the course of the five games.

And while no silverware came home in Chadley’s suitcase, the experience gained against international opposition will no doubt prove invaluable.

The 6’4″ athlete lives and breathes basketball, playing mostly as a shooting guard or power forward for Northwood High School in Durban North.

He previously told the Courier he wants to test himself against the best and hopes to go to the USA to play college basketball.
