iLembe Cricket aims high for 80th season with new coach and big ambitions

Scouting for new recruits to bolster strong core of experienced players.

New coach, plans for new grounds, and big ambitions – iLembe Cricket is ready to hit the next level as they gear up for their 80th season.

The district will celebrate 80 years of cricket in the upcoming 2024/25 season, led by the men’s first team who remain in the Premier Division.

Premier Division cricket is the highest level of club cricket in the province and iLembe have long fought above their weight to cement their place among the big boys.

Currently hosted at grounds in Gledhow, the team is hopeful that plans for more permanent facilities come to fruition.

A coaching change this year will have a more immediate impact.

“We are happy to announce that Gavin Reddy has come on board as the new first team coach,” said iLembe Cricket President, Desigan Pillay.

“Gavin is the director of cricket at Curro Salt Rock and a Level 2 certified provincial coach. He is highly skilled in delivering structured and professional coaching across various levels of the game.”

Reddy will have his first chance to see new recruits in action this weekend at the district trials at Gledhow on Saturday at 2.30pm.

iLembe has a strong core of experienced players, but is always looking for new talent to help take the team to the next level.

If you would like to find out more about how to join, call team manager Sashen Sadayan at 076 391 4320.

As for games themselves, iLembe will be in action from the end of September when the Premier T20 league kicks off against the African Warriors.

While we will have to wait to see the level of performance, the teams will no doubt look like professionals thanks to a R15 000 kit sponsorship from Champion Metal.

Pillay thanked the KwaDukuza-based company for their support.
