SA’s best skaters ready to shred in Ballito

Get ready for 4th annual Ballito Pro Skate Jam.

The fourth annual Ballito Pro Skate Jam returns this weekend and promises to be better than ever with a packed slate of excellent skaters.

Two-time champion Kalvyn Mac Millan will be back to defend his title on Saturday and leads a hungry chasing pack of skaters itching to etch their name on the trophy.

Presented by Volcom and Etnies, the event has drawn talent from across the country and it is looking like a day not to miss as part of this year’s Ballito Pro festivities.

Skating kicks off at 12 midday and is divided into Open and Grom categories with a Best Trick competition running too.

This year will also include live music from Durban punk rock band Scrubs, so expect energy to be high as the day goes on.

“Every year the contest keeps getting bigger and better with everyone improving and the level of skateboarding just keeps getting higher,” said Mac Millan, who hails from Umhlanga.

“For me, contests are not about winning but more about pushing each other out of our comfort zones, and doing what we wouldn’t normally do in a skate session.

“The crowd hype and support also feed that energy and adrenaline, so these events are always a good time for me.”

Aside from the professional skaters however, the competition is also open to anyone who wants to strut their stuff in the revamped Ballito Bowl.

Entry is free on the day and all skaters will be eligible for a share of R28 000 in cash prizes, plus a stacked prize pool of hampers from Volcom, Etnies, Groundswell, Rise Up Movement and Monster Energy.

The Skate Jam has become one of the most exciting events on the Ballito Pro calendar, but could not have been possible without the Spark Up the Parks Initiative which first revitalised the skate bowl.

Started by RE/MAX Dolphin Realtors, the campaign was well supported by the Ballito community and it is now one of the best used public utilities in the area.

A proposed flat track for novice skaters is planned but more support is needed for it to become a reality.
