Ballito Pro: Catch the free concert wave and more

Daily activities at the beach, include yoga, Pilates, a packed retail area and plenty to do for the kids.

Ballito may be the capital of the surfing world for the next two weeks but there is plenty on offer for the non wave-obsessed too.

Alongside familiar returning Ballito Pro events like the free concerts in Salt Rock, there are also a host of new and exciting things to do while the entertainment extravaganza is in town this year.

So pack some sunscreen, grab a friend or two and head down to Willard Beach every day between now and July 8.

Last year’s Friday night concert saw hundreds take to Salt Rock Main Beach.

First things first, it is a surfing festival after all, so diarise these dates:

June 26 – Final day of Rookie Rippers (U12/14/16/18) action and the returning KZN Development Surfing Initiative.

June 27 and 28 – Two days of the Ballito Pro Junior, including some of the world’s best U20 surfers.

June 29 and 30 – The inaugural Ballito Open, open to junior surfers worldwide who will vie for 1 000 points towards the Junior Qualifying Series.

July 1 to 8 – The main event. The top pro surfers competing on the Challenger Series – the second highest level of professional surfing.

Desmond and the Tutus.

Non-surfing entertainment options:

Daily activities at the beach include yoga, Pilates, a packed retail area and plenty to do for the kids.

Expect sand castle competitions, beach games, environmental awareness programmes, dance lessons from JivewithJen and a new art installation from Painting on Purpose.

The thrilling Skate Jam will also return to the Ballito Bowl on June 29 – find full details on Page 19.

DJ Merlon will return to the Ballito Pro concert stage this year.

And there’s more than enough to keep you occupied once the kids have gone to sleep too!

Enjoy the addition of Corona Sunset Sessions for six nights of the Pro this year, while Good Vibes and Conchilla offer later-night after parties.

Foodies can also look forward to the first Mozambik Oyster Festival hosted at the restaurant on July 4.

Then it is again the turn of the free music concerts to put the rock back into Salt Rock on July 4 and 5.

December Streets.

The July 4 concert will host an exciting series of DJs and artists, including Young Stunna, Merlon, Asante, Stanky and the Battle of the DJs winner.

Listen to Desmond and the Tutus, December Streets, Veranda Panda, Saxby Twins and Timo ODV the next evening on July 5.

Both concerts will be held at Salt Rock main beach, find details at theballitopro.com or via the Ballito Pro social media pages.

The concerts are ready to rock on July 4 and 5.
