This year’s North Coast Shield served up a nail-biting finish at Darnall Country Club, with Maidstone emerging as overall winners.
Players from 10 teams across the North Coast teed off on March 3, playing for both pairs prizes and an overall team trophy.
The Shield has been running annually since 1933 and is a sought-after prize which guarantees local bragging rights for the next calendar year.
Maidstone have dominated in recent memory, claiming six of the last eight victories.
Victory number six was far from breezy however, and the men from Tongaat narrowly edged out Mtunzini by just a single point.
At the end of 36 gruelling holes, it finished with Maidstone on 252 and Mtunzini on 251 – agony for the northerners!
Hosts Darnall claimed bronze on 242, followed by Monzi (241, on count-out), Umfolozi (241), Umhlali (235), eShowe (233), Kwambo (222) and Mandeni (212).
Empangeni typically fields the tenth team, but had pulled out of this year’s event.
In the pairs campaign, Maidstone’s Martin Hopkins and Amar Singh took home the honours.
