Newcomer Senisha Moodley nets national angling trophies

After taking up fishing on a whim with her then fiancée, Moodley joined the Phoenix Angling Club and her star has risen ever since.

Tongaat’s Senisha Moodley is an angling powerhouse.

She has been selected as part of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) team to fish in Langebaan next February and needs to reel in R25 000 to make that possible.

Moodley is relatively new to shore-based angling, first picking it up in 2022, but has already won trophies at national level.

After taking up fishing on a whim with her then fiancée, Moodley joined the Phoenix Angling Club and her star has risen ever since.

“Earlier this year, owing to a late drop out in the ladies’ team, I was selected at the last minute to represent KZN at the inter-provincial tournament in Struisbaai,” said Moodley.

Senisha Moodley poses with the two trophies she won as a result of her 9kg kob catch.

“I quickly realised how demanding tournament fishing was and found myself in tears after the first day of competition.”

Moodley picked herself up before the second and final day however, deciding to target smaller sand sharks to at least get some scores on the board.

“Little did I know that this would be a special day. Along with a few smaller fish, my bait was picked up by a kob that weighed 9kg. It took everyone by surprise,” she said.

“It earned me two prizes, one being the largest edible fish caught and the other the outstanding catch of the tournament.”

She is desperate to get another chance to prove herself at that level.

Whether catching her record 15kg brown skate off Westbrook or hooking her first 3.5kg kob with her fiancée in Mtwalume in 2022, fishing is now a huge part of Moodley’s life.

Funds are an obstacle in the way of further competitive angling and she is appealing for help, large or small.
