Dolphin Coast’s Hoosen and Bishop take on squash nationals

The duo will be hoping to capitalise on the national exposure to move up the local rankings and unseat the Dolphin Coast's best player, Francis Bradford.

The Dolphin Coast was well represented at the recent squash nationals where Umar Hoosen and Mark Bishop took on the country’s best.

Ranked second and fourth on the Dolphin Coast respectively, the duo both represented the KwaZulu-Natal B team at the Growthpoint Inter-provincial Squash Tournament in Pretoria.

The tournament is the most competitive team squash event in the country and included more than 200 representatives drawn from six provinces, as well as international teams from Zambia and Namibia.

Competing in the C section of the tournament, the KZN B team finished fifth out of eight teams.

“The conditions on court were tough and it was extremely difficult to adapt to the climate in a short space of time, however the exposure to a different level of squash has been humbling and incredibly motivating to push me to keep working and striving to get to the top,” said Hoosen, a teacher at Curro Salt Rock.

“Squash to me is like a game of chess, it is all about strategising the point and executing your next move where you have to be a problem solver. I hope my students and young lads can apply this concept to life when it throws its challenges.”

Hoosen represents Umhlali Country Club and Bishop plays for Salt Rock Country Club in the Dolphin Coast Squash League.

Both will be hoping to capitalise on the national exposure to move up the local rankings and unseat the Dolphin Coast’s best player, Francis Bradford.
