Meet the Schumacher of paddling

Get to know the man who some have called the Michael Schumacher of international paddling

The Courier sat down recently for a Facebook live video interview with Salt Rock’s Hank McGregor, taking the time to get to know the man who some have called the Michael Schumacher of international paddling.

Born in Cape Town, the current world surfski champion and multiple title holder has lived in various places along South Africa’s coastline his whole life, saying that he could never be too far from the salt water.

“I grew up on a yacht for the first years of my life,” McGregor admitted.

From a very young age Hank enjoyed water sports.

“The first time I ever went down a river I was only six years old.”

He moved to Durban at the age of eight and eventually completed his schooling at Durban High School, moving to the North Coast about five years ago when he married his wife, Pippa.

Talking about clinching the World Surfski series in Hong Kong last year before heading to Australia to complete the last event in the series, McGregor said it was always fun to beat the Australians on their home ground.

McGregor will be taking on the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon on February 16-18 and intends to maintain his dominance in canoeing as well as surfskiing.
