#Letter: The torment of perpetual stink welcomes you to Tongaat

Apart from the unbearable stench, the once lush landscape and healthy ecosystem are being destroyed.

Tongaat resident Charles Munsamy writes:

A deluge of raw sewage has been making its way across lush greenery at a vacant property in Henrietta Street, Tongaat for some time now.

Apart from the unbearable stench, the once lush landscape and healthy ecosystem are being destroyed.

The filth that flows into the greenery and engulfs the vegetation has become toxic to the birds and mongoose that inhabit the area.

This catastrophe has become a common feature over the years as the municipality’s usual team of five come to attend to the sewer line, using the same method and expecting different results each time.

The residents living around this blighted spot have to bear the indignation of it all.

This continuous flow of raw sewage into the stream flows behind Mediclinic and empties its cargo of faeces near Brake Village temple into a stream which then finds its way into the Umdloti River.

The atmosphere around the once picturesque Watson Highway that runs between the park and Brake Village temple has now become saturated with a perpetual stink.

The municipality needs to address this perennial problem as a matter of urgency.
