#ReportBack: Drainage systems need maintenance

Most of the roads and bridges recently repaired through the flood relief grant have again been damaged or washed away.

Over hundred homes were affected by the recent floods in the KwaDukuza and surrounding areas.

While the flood was unprecedented in recent times, it has left an indelible mark on people’s lives.

It seems the main cause is that storm water drainage is not maintained on a regular basis by the KwaDukuza Municipality.

You have verges growing on the side of the roads on the tar causing water to deviate direction.

Most of the roads and bridges that were recently repaired through the flood relief grant have again been damaged or washed away.

Some could be attributed to poor quality of repairs.

The cost of damages to infrastructure could well run into hundreds of millions of rands.

Both the iLembe District Municipality and KwaDukuza Municipality must have clear master plans to deal with sewer and storm water issues.

The Democratic Alliance is compiling a list of affected areas and issues affecting communities so that it can form part of the project for emergency funding approval by national and provincial government.

We will continue to play oversight and monitor progress.
