#Letter: Don’t dilute history milestones for campaigning

"The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza is disappointed to note that the ANC is seeking to dilute the significance of a deeply symbolic day in our history and reduce it to a campaigning tool" - Privi Makhan.

DA KwaDukuza caucus whip Privi Makhan writes:

The arrival of Indian indentured labourers in South Africa is well documented in our history books.

They have left us with a priceless heritage and their sacrifices and toils must be celebrated.

On the 163rd anniversary of the arrival of indentured labourers in South Africa, the ANC-led administration in KwaDukuza municipality presented an item to council, seeking R171 000 in funding to celebrate the historic arrival over the voter registration weekend.

While the purpose may have been well intended, there were a number of factors that needed to be considered and questioned, among them:

• The specific significance of the 163rd year, and not the 160th year which was celebrated across KZN, except in KwaDukuza?
• The timing of the celebration over voter registration weekend raised serious question marks.
• In addition to this, does the responsibility of planning of events such as these fall under the ambit of administration or politicians, or are the lines being blurred again?

The reality is that the majority of the people of KwaDukuza, across all demographics would rather have R171 000 allocated to the delivery of basic services to communities, and not on an event or programme lasting a few hours.

The people of KwaDukuza have seen through the relentless attempts by the failing ANC to hold onto their dwindling support.

The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza is disappointed to note that the ANC is seeking to dilute the significance of a deeply symbolic day in our history and reduce it to a campaigning tool.
