As we go into the much anticipated festive season we can expect the usual challenges that come with this time of the year.
These include the influx of holidaymakers and daily visitors to KwaDukuza beaches and the various levels of by-laws contraventions.
Over the years this combination has posed challenges to our local Saps, KwaDukuza Crime Prevention officers and local security companies.
The last two years or so have seen local stakeholders aligning to keep crime to a bare minimum.
There have been no reports of unruly behaviour, robberies and stabbings. This was largely thanks to the checkpoints for liquor, narcotics and weapons at public amenities.
Marine Safety had an exceptional season last year with zero drowning while they were on shift.
Beaches with no lifesavers are still a challenge as beachgoers attempt to swim in these waters not realising the dangers.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has cautioned KDM Community Safety to keep their fingers on the pulse at Nonoti Beach this year as it’s a beach node in the making.
Another proposal by the DA, to use the Ballito Library as a base for a Joint Operational Centre (JOC), has been accepted.
It will comprise of KwaDukuza Saps, KDM Crime Prevention and local security and medic companies, as well the community policing forum and Ballito Neighbourhood Watch volunteers.
KDM by-laws allow residents to celebrate fireworks around Diwali and New Year’s Eve.
