#ReportBack: Water problems a pressing issue

"Based on the response from ActionSA community surveys, we have initiated a petition to get iLembe to renew the contract with Siza Water" - iLembe District Municipality ActionSA PR Councillor, Annet Michelle Sewraj.

The iLembe District Municipality has once again come under the spotlight with their poor service delivery and recent debacle over the termination of its contract for hired vehicles.

iLembe communities were left stranded with no tankers to provide water, as well as no repair and service vehicles to attend to complaints of leaks, faults and damages.

As ActionSA we first sought to verify the incidents and issues that were being reported and wrote to the municipal manager on October 3 asking for clarity.

To date, we have received no response.

This blatant disregard of our enquiry begs the question: If councillors are treated in this manner, then what chance do the people of iLembe have in seeing their queries attended to?

While people were without water and proper services owing to non-payment, councillors were treated to an overnight stay at a nearby hotel as part of a two-day workshop.

ActionSA voiced their disapproval on the waste of money.

Siza Water has been servicing areas from Etete to Zimbali since 1999 on a 30-year contract with iLembe.

They have been doing a sterling job thus far by providing the region with clean, fresh water and timeous services.

But once their contract ends in 2029, iLembe will take over the provision of water and sanitation in this area.

This will place the residents of the concession area in dire straits given the recent track record of iLembe with regards to water supply and service delivery.

Based on the response from ActionSA community surveys, we have initiated a petition to get iLembe to renew the contract with Siza.

We need every single resident to do their part by signing this petition.

It can be found at change.org/p/stop-ilembe-s-takeover-of-siza-water/.
