#Letter: Plan to address unclaimed bodies issue

"She mentioned the news article and on receiving a copy, he went to the Phoenix mortuary and was traumatised to find his deceased son about two months after his death" - Lutchmiah Naidoo.

Tongaat resident Lutchmiah Naidoo writes:

A recent news headline read “1509 bodies unclaimed in KwaZulu-Natal”. This is shocking.

This can be drastically reduced if the various authorities work together. Here are two suggestions:

1. As soon as a body is unclaimed, a thumb print of the deceased is taken, sent to Home Affairs for verification and with the details, the next of kin can be located and notified.

2. Details of the deceased are circulated to all the police stations to be pinned on a notice board for public scrutiny.

On March 8 a body was found at North Beach, Durban and taken to the Phoenix mortuary.

This was published in the Post newspaper but unfortunately the parents did not read about this.

After a while, the father regularly went to the Chatsworth police station, until he was told not to come to the station again as he would be notified when they had any news.

Fake information also led him to travel to Bloemfontein.

About two months with no news, he phoned his aunt who wanted news about the family.

He casually mentioned his frustration in locating the whereabouts of his son.

She mentioned the news article and on receiving a copy, he went to the Phoenix mortuary and was traumatised to find his deceased son about two months after his death.

Let us help others who are still trying to locate missing family.
