The Democratic Alliance is concerned about the steamrolling of two senior municipal appointments at Tuesday’s iLembe special council meeting.
The appointments of the senior manager for community services and chief financial officer were both pushed through.
We objected, citing a lack of detailed information on the candidates and their scores.
It is normal practice and good governance that shortlisted candidates’ qualifications, experience and scores are the main factors when considering such appointments.
To our surprise, only the names of the candidates were shown, in order of preference.
This is unacceptable, particularly given that the agenda was electronically distributed 10 minutes after the council meeting had started.
We will pursue further clarity from the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs since the resolution will need approval from the minister.
It is the prerogative of council to make the final decision after following due process and that has not happened.
With the level of corruption in appointment processes, it leaves much to be desired why they were steamrolled.
These appointments need to be thoroughly vetted before they are approved by council and employed by the municipality.
We object to the steamrolling of the process.
