#ReportBack: Update on projects in the pipeline

Flood damage repairs to Colwyn Drive should have gotten underway, but the delay was due to Siza Water having to secure its infrastructure which was a contractual requirement by KDM and their appointed consultants.

For those who missed the ward 22 public meeting last week, here is a summary.

Civils Projects:
The current capital spend in ward 22 for the 2022/23 financial year is R7-million with the following roads that were fully rehabilitated – Fairway, Club, Garland and Basil Hulett.

Flood damage repairs to Colwyn Drive should have gotten underway, but the delay was due to Siza Water having to secure its infrastructure which was a contractual requirement by KDM and their appointed consultants.

Following a collaborative site meeting on Monday, it was reaffirmed that both contractors will be working in unison to ensure work gets underway and with minimal disruption to services.

Work will commence on the Tipperary corner first, with small scope changes. Traffic control and yellow armco barricades will be positioned at both sites.

A temporary wooden bridge will be installed at the 44 Colwyn beach access point in the new week.

Electricity Projects:
The Dukuza substation is a multi-year project that will ensure reliability of supply to the ward. The project is currently underway.

Other projects in the ward include the refurbishment of the Shaka’s Rock transformer and the replacement of switchroom switchgear at the Village substation

Fifty-one percent of our public lighting is functional, up from 39 percent in July.

Beach ablution upgrades:
Tiffany’s beach has been upgraded by the community and local business.

Salt Rock beach’s main ablution upgrade is underway and the car park is also being resurfaced. This is council funded.

Traffic congestion and signalisation:
• The P330/ Dunkirk-Mount Richmore signalisation remains a contentious issue. The road authority to grant permission for this is the Transport Department (DoT).

KDM confirms it has had recent engagements with DoT, who have committed to provide comments on six applications within the KDM jurisdiction.

There is currently no timeframe for this with the last follow-up being done on September 22. As soon as any new information becomes available, it will be shared.

• P474 congestion: The upgrade to the P228 and the approval of the Sheffield interchange will alleviate some pressure. The upgrade to this road is being developer funded.

We continue to work with local business, The Dolphin Coast Conservancy, iLembe Chamber of Commerce, Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch and our other community partners to improve Ward 22.
