#ReportBack: Vandalism of traffic lights of great concern

"I've received reports that the repaired traffic lights are allegedly being vandalised overnight by a group of individuals" - Ward 30 councillor, Jack Abrahams.

Over the past few months residents would have noticed the traffic lights on the P445 were often out of order.

They would get fixed, but the next morning be defective again and I would have to deal with the complaints and backlash from the residents.

Firstly, traffic lights are the responsibility of Department of Transport (DoT), so getting them fixed in the first place is a mission, only for it to be vandalised again.

I’ve received reports that the repaired traffic lights are allegedly being vandalised overnight by a group of individuals. I will not get into that in the local newspaper.

The cable has clearly been tampered with.

Last Wednesday the contractor had repaired three sets of traffic lights. On Friday morning I received a complaint that the set at the N2 coming into Ballito was again out of order.

I found that the box next to the road was ajar and found that the cable was damaged. The perpetrators clearly have no regard for the safety of our road users and these intersections are all very dangerous. Also, with the traffic lights not working traffic is backed up for kilometers.

If anyone has any information on any act of vandalism, don’t hesitate to contact the KwaDukuza municipality’s control room at 032 946 2711 or Umhlali police at 032 947 9900.
