#ReportBack: This is what’s happening in Salt Rock

Six councillors recently met with the KDM Electricity Business Unit to fully appraise the various stakeholders on the state of electricity infrastructure.

People always talk about how time flies.

One doesn’t really understand it until days merge into weeks and months, and it all just becomes a blur of frenzied activity.

The Barrier Lane project is one such example.

The rehabilitation project that commenced on February 8, 2021, after multiple failures over the years, was finally handed over on August 27.

It was truly remarkable to witness this project unfold, with incredible synergy between the contractor, KDM Civils, the appointed consultants and the Ward 22 community.

Failures on the electricity network continue to plague us.

Six councillors recently met with the KDM Electricity Business Unit to fully appraise the various stakeholders on the state of electricity infrastructure.

The shortcomings in this department are glaring.

Critical maintenance must be prioritized in order to ensure that the network remains stable.

The long outstanding KwaDukuza Wayleave policy was adopted by council last week.

This policy will compel external service providers, such as fibre installers, to be responsible for repairs to damaged infrastructure for a period of 2 years.

It will prevent further obliteration of our already frail infrastructure.

The KDM Integrated Waste Management Plan was also presented at last week’s council workshop, by Mr Siyabonga Khanyile, ED: Community Services, who highlighted a sustainable strategy on waste disposal and recycling.

Waste management challenges in many communities are overwhelming.

The war on waste will require alignment between communities and local government, with communities being at the helm of assuming responsibility for their own spaces.

The #PitchIn Campaign, which is the brainchild of Mr Siyabonga Khanyile, will also go a long way in creating sustainable awareness in many communities.

With local government elections now exactly 50 days away, residents in the Ward are encouraged to ensure they are correctly registered to vote.
